Sapientia is an occasional esoteric series featuring text and art resonate with alchemy, astrology, theurgy, qabalah, tarot, ceremonial magic, Hermeticism and Rosicrucianism. The first issue features an excellent essay penned by Frater Acher on the important theosophic and Rosicrucian figure Johann Comenius. To commemorate the release of this inaugural issue Frater Acher has expressed the following: "There is no better time than now to acknowledge the challenge we have been thrown into — and the elders who mastered it before us. No ancestor better embodies lifelong resistance to despair and numbness, to cynicism and fear in the face of terror, war, and loss than John Amos Comenius: Moravian bishop, pansophic visionary, and spiritual heir to both Paracelsus and the Rosicrucian manifestos. This man was not only an example for his own age. Modern Western magic would look very different without him. His influence shaped not only education, politics, and early modern science, but also applied magic and the great Rosicrucian project of world reform. Ouroboros Press' SAPIENTIA journal now offers a standalone volume dedicated to my essay The One Thing Necessary. In a media landscape that monetizes outrage and rewards fragmentation, Comenius' idea that wonder begins in direct sensory encounter with the world — inside the magical circle and beyond — reads less like 17th-century mysticism and more like a practical instruction for how to remain human. I hope this small text can be a calm hand on your shoulder, an old presence at your back, or a lantern at your side. The digital edition is free, and a small number of classical pamphlet-style printed copies will follow." Frater Acher The print editions will apear in two versions, one available in the US here at Ouroboros Press and one available through Courtyard Books in the UK. This item is currently at press for an April 15th release, orders may be placed here. 22 Teachings School of Hermetic Science & Magical Arts is a Los Angeles based esoteric school which also has students world wide. William Kiesel, who is also faculty at the school, has here designed a special print featuring aspects of its curriculum and resonant symbols. The 11 x 17 print is now being offered on the website.
The Consecrated Little Book of Black Venus, otherwise known as TUBA VENERIS is currently in layout production at Ouroboros Press. A revised English translation of this fabled grimoire attributed by John Dee has been produced by Teresa Burns and Nancy Turner. The translators, who were also behind the Ouroboros Press edition of MONAS HIEROGLYPHICA have written an essay explaining recent scholarship around the Dee authorship of the text. Like other grimoires, the Tuba Veneris authorship is most likely spurious, as we have seen with texts like the Keys of Solomon.
Nonetheless, John Dee, as pseudo-author remains on this edition, which also includes a new portrait of Dee and other illustrations as drawn by Artist Benjamin A. Vierling. This Ouroboros Press edition of Tuba Veneris will feature the original Latin and English texts and newly drawn sigils. Trade and Deluxe editions of this book will be offered in limited quantities.
